Peter Beard

Named after the artist himself, Peter Beard explores the life and history of Peter Beard (1838-2020) during his time spent in New York and Africa. Known for his multi-hyphenate practices and artistic endeavours in photography, writing and ecology, Peter Beard acts as a retrospective for the artist’s career. After finding himself in Kenya, Beard decided to film and write about the land, flora and fauna — but following the nation’s population explosion in the ‘60s, Beard focused on the things he witnessed across the country. As a result, he documented and recorded what he saw using photographs as a canvas onto which he superimposed multilayered contact sheets, ephemera, found objects, newspaper clippings, handwriting, drawings and more. Peter Beard, then, showcases these intricate collages with extreme detail — depicting Beard’s beautiful observations across this large-format monograph.
