The title of the zine comes from the Old English Christian poem of the same name, wherein the speaker dreams of the rood (crucifix) on which Christ accepted death. Smith uses this concept as vehicle throughout The Dream of the Rood to display a series of photos depicting trees marked red for clearing to recontextualize the meaning of deforestation.
